Why I'm Finally Listening to What My Body Is Telling Me

Ok so I’m about to get really real and raw here for a minute.  I honestly never really knew what people meant when they talked about feeling “aligned” physically, emotionally, and spiritually.  I pretended I got it and just tried to go with the flow.  The major problem that I ran into while doing so would be me focusing more on one of those three aspects while letting the other two slide.  For example, one month I would be super good at eating clean, working out, stretching, drinking my water, etc.  BUT I would notice that I wasn’t upping my emotional well-being and spiritual practice as equally.  I would notice this and try to adjust what I was doing my shifting my focus more towards meditating, mindfulness, and self-care...and as with before my body would suffer physically.

 

It has been a tough merry-go-round and every part of my life was suffering.  I found I had very little consistency in what I was doing and that made me feel like I was all over the place.  I would be tired all the time, lack motivation, and just feel an overwhelming sense of blah.  I had to shift my focus to looking at these three areas (physical, emotional, spiritual) as a whole unit versus separate components.  Because, in reality, that’s what life is all about...BALANCE!  Now I am not saying that I’m an expert at all, but I am hoping that if there is someone out there feeling the same way, that they can take something from this.

 

Here are some things that I personally do to conquer this whole alignment thang:

  • Working out:  I’m not someone who can go to the gym or do a quick workout at home by myself.  I like to workout with my husband or friends and do things that I truly enjoy!  Say whaaaaa???  Enjoying a workout???  I’ve recently fallen in love with rock climbing.  It’s a totally different challenge than I’m used to and it is SO MUCH FUN!  Not only is it physically challenging (the actual act of scaling the wall), it is emotionally gratifying (the feeling of accomplishment you get) AND spiritually (greater self awareness and knowledge). 

  • Audiobooks:  When I’m in the car I love listening to audiobooks instead of the radio.  According to a Stats Canada survey done in 2011, the average commute time for Canadians nationwide is 25 minutes one-way!  Think about how much you can learn and grow by turning your commute into something that can totally benefit you!

  • Learning new things:  I personally get bored very easily.  To escape my boredom I love pushing my boundaries and reaching beyond my current skill set.  Currently I’m diving into learning about finance and other money related things.  I never learned about these things growing up and have almost tried to avoid them as an adult.  But in order to change that I had to step up and do something about it.

  • Regular chiropractic adjustments:  I seriously don't think I would be able to function if I didn't see my amazing chiropractor!  I make regular preventative appointments in order to keep my body rockin'. 

  • Meditation: Sitting in silence for an extended period of time isn’t what I would call ideal, however if you genuinely work at it by practicing, it is amazing how easy it comes.  I like guided meditations that take you through visualizations.  I’ve found that doing this has brought greater clarity and perspective in my life.

  • Essential oils:  I don’t even know where to begin!  Essential oils can help in sooooo many ways.  I use them to help with my emotions, stress, and anxiety, as well as for the physical health of my body.  I’m going to dive in a little deeper to these topics in the future. 

  • Detoxing:  I don't mean this term in a physical sense but more of a life detox.  Getting rid of the negative and focusing on the positive.  Whether that be toxic friendships, negative talk at work, or even family.  Sometimes, in order for ourselves to move on and grow we have to cut ties with those who are holding us back.

  • Taking time:  How many times have you said that you wish you had more time to do X or that there's never enough time to do Y?  What I've done about it take days off!  Such a crazy concept!  I actually take time to do things that make me happy and that bring me joy.  Like going for lunch with friends, getting a pedicure, taking a nice hot bath while watching some Netflix, whatever your little heart desires!  Because how can you fill another's cup when yours isn't full?

 

By stepping back and taking moments to listen to my body and what it is telling me it needs, I'm able to support myself in an entirely different way.  I'm not perfect and I don't claim to be, but I'm working on getting my mind, body, and spirit aligned in order to truly be my true, radiant self.
