So what is the deal with diffusing anyways?

The very first way I started to use essential oils was by adding a couple drops to a diffuser.  Now, to preface this, I had NO IDEA how to use essential oils at the beginning.  I didn’t even know what a diffuser was or how it worked.  All I knew was that a mist would sprinkle my house in a yummy smelling scent.  If this is what you think of when you hear essential oil diffuser, that is totally okay!  This is the exact reason I’m writing this post.  Get ready to get educated on what diffusers are, why they are so important, and some of the many reasons everyone needs a diffuser {{or five}} in their home.

 

To break it down for you, diffusers are used as a method to enhance an environment by spreading the tiny molecules of essential oils around for therapeutic use.  Ultimately, when you turn on your lovely diffuser, all of the teeny tiny particles get dispersed throughout the air.  What is so incredibly important is that research has shown that when essential oils are inhaled, these tiny molecules travel through the nose to the olfactory membrane.  The olfactory membrane is like a scent database with a bunch of little receptors that pinpoint certain smells.   Once the smell has been identified, this signal is sent to the olfactory bulb that amplifies the signal in order to be further transmitted through the olfactory nerve to the limbic system of the brain.  

 

Are you still with me here?  Good.  Now the limbic system is the area of the brain that is all about emotional and psychological responses.  So, to give you an example, say that whenever you went to your grandmother’s house she always has a fresh batch of cookies baking in the oven for you.  Now, whenever you smell cookies baking you think of those times at sweet old grandma’s.  This is the limbic system is action!  Make sense?  Ok that’s enough sciencey stuff for the moment.  

 

By diffusing essential oils, you are stimulating this area of the brain in a certain way depending on the constituents in the specific oil you are using.  These responses can range from relaxing to energizing and anywhere in between!  How cool right?

 

If you don’t already realize why you need a diffuser in every room of your house then I’ve prepared a list of sorts to really bring the point home.  Read on my friend, read on.

 

  1. The calming and tranquility factor: have you ever walked into a day spa, took a big breath in, and immediately felt relaxed from the lovely aroma?  Why wouldn’t you want that in your home on a day-to-day basis?!  Picture yourself coming home from a long day of work, drawing a bath, and throwing some lavender in the diffuser. Ahhh so nice.  Some other great calming oils are Clary Sage, Bergamot, and doTerra’s oil blend named Peace.

  2. Easy breathing:  Essential oils are great for reducing inflamed and congested airways when inhaled.  Because breathing is kind of important don’t you think?  Try peppermint, eucalyptus, and an amazing doTerra blend called Easy Air.

  3. Ward off germs:  Germs are EVERYWHERE!  I don’t mean to scare you, but it’s true.  That’s why I love to have these microscopic gremlins cleaned out of my air using oils that are ideal for eliminating bacteria and airborne viruses.  Those oils include tea tree, lemon, oregano, and my fav OnGuard by doTerra.  Also a bonus, by diffusing these oils you can prevent the spread of illness between family members!

  4. Energy and focus:  Personally, I find that around 3pm my energy level starts to majorly decrease, let alone trying to find the motivation to do things when I get home from work.  My secret is to add some peppermint, wild orange, grapefruit, and/or cypress to my diffuser when I get home.

  5. Allergies:  Most people with seasonal allergies know what it is like to have the constant runny nose, swollen and itchy eyes, and perma nasal sounding voice.  Sounds glorious eh?  My secret weapon when hayfever hits me like a ton of spore covered bricks...lemon, lavender, and peppermint diffusing in the morning, evening, and throughout the night.

  6. Sleep:  Ahhh yes...sleep is a biggie for so many people and I totally get it.  I love my comfy bed and sleeping in.  But there used to be times where I found it hard to fall asleep or I didn’t feel completely rested when I did get to sleep (especially with shiftwork).  All of that changed when I started using vetiver and Serenity (doTerra’s restful blend) in my diffuser at night.  Talk about about zzz heaven!  For an added benefit I throw in some cedarwood too to really up the ante.   

  7. Pain management: Generally, most people will tell you to use essential oils topically (as in directly on your skin) for muscle aches and body pain, however you can also diffuse them to boost their effects.  Specifically good as a way to get relief from chronic pain like headaches, aching joints, and tired muscles.  Try lavender, eucalyptus, and rosemary.

  8. Stress and anxiety relief:  I am someone who absolutely suffers from anxiety and chronic stress.  I’m an overthinker and recovering perfectionist.  What works best for me to combat these feelings are grounding oils.  These are oils that have more earthy and woodsy aromas like sandalwood, cedarwood, doTerra’s Balance blend, and frankinscence.  I truly believe that the person I am today would not be here without these babies.

  9. Purification:  Don’t you hate that when you cook salmon, the ENTIRE house smells of it for days?  Throw lemon, tea tree, or doTerra’s Purify blend in that diffuser of yours and let the magic happen!  Bye bye leftover food aromas!

  10. Safer than other methods:  This is pretty self explanatory...candles and hot lamps can be very dangerous.  I love my diffuser because it gives me all of the benefits of the oils while making the house smell amazing without the danger of fire.  It is important to find a diffuser with an automatic shut off so you can turn it on and leave it be.

 

 

Now that you’ve come to terms with the fact that diffusers are a must in your household, I should tell you what you should be looking for when trying to find a diffuser.  First look for a diffuser that tells you how much square footage it can reach and get one that works best for your space.  Next, find one that has an auto shut off so you don’t have to worry about falling asleep on the couch while it’s running dry.  Some diffusers have a light option as well, which just comes down to preference.  I like having the option the turn the light on and off, that way I can use it in the bedroom with it off or living room with it on.

 

I also want to mention that use and trust doTerra essential oils.  The purity of the oils along with their concentration are what originally drew me to them.  I also love how the company sources their oils indigenously in order to obtain the most top quality oil out there while making sure to give back to those areas and communities around the world.  On that note, you should only need to use a drop or two of oil in your diffuser at a time, because less is more in this case.
