Stressed, anxious, nervous, rundown, fogged, stuck, overwhelmed? If any or all of these words describe you, then you are definitely in the right place!
I am the first to admit that I am a victim of stress and anxiety. For as long as I can remember I was always worried about something. Whether it was grades in school, the mistake I made in my last hockey game, or even fretting about work. I just thought that was who I was and I just had to deal with it. Because I was stressed all the time, my body started showing for physical signs of sickness. My poor immune system was so run down that it couldn’t keep up. I wasn’t getting enough sleep because it felt like the world was on my shoulders. I’d had enough and starting seeking out something that could help me. That’s when I discovered a better and safer path for my body and mind.
To me, essential oils represent control. They are tools that I can use whenever I want in order to make my body feel at its best. The oils themselves have guided me to take better care of myself in other aspects of my life too. I find myself more balanced emotionally and in turn more healthy physically. These oils are really just little bottles full of big magic! The community that I have been introduced to through these oils is filled with people who are so inspiring, kind-hearted, supportive, and empowering. I am truly grateful for what these oils have done and I want to share this same feeling with you!
One of the most influential things that I have come across while on my journey to living a stress-free life is essential oils. To me, essential oils provide to opportunity to take control of how I feel by consciously making healthier choices. I believe that the body is able to heal itself when given the right tools and support. These tools include, as mentioned previously, eating right, staying hydrated, and keeping active, as well as utilizing the healing powers of plants!
Here’s what these babies are all about! Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in trees, flowers, roots, bushes, stems, fruits, needles, roots, and seeds. They are the life force of the plant and protect them from environmental threats so the plant can be kept alive and healthy. This is fundamentally what they do for us in our bodies! These extracts are very concentrated, especially when comparing them to dried herbs. It is important to note that not all essential oils are the same. Only pure, therapeutic grade oils that are sources indigenously are what we should be using for our bodies. We should be seeking the best in order for us to be our best.
Using essential oils aromatically, by diffusing or inhaling, is the best way that I’ve found to tackle stress. Basically what happens when we smell an essential oil is that those tiny odor molecules travel through the nose, stimulating the olfactory nerves. This stimulation sends a signal to the olfactory bulb in the brain, which sends impulses to the limbic system! The brain’s limbic system is so important because it is responsible for our emotions! Cha-ching! We have found the jack pot! Now I’ll give you the basics of the most important oils I use for my emotional healing and wellbeing!
The Uplifting Oils
This is one of the first oils I fell in love with because of its fresh and sweet scent. The oil comes from the peel of the orange and contains many antioxidants. Also, its aroma is extremely uplifting.
Another citrus oil that is known for its purifying properties. It is like a little bottle of sunshine! You can put a drop or two in some water to help hydrate throughout the day.
This is a blend of a bunch of citrus oils plus vanilla! Can you say creamsicle?! Like the other two citrus oils, this has a refreshing and fruity aroma. This combo of oils makes for a really invigorating aroma.
This is an amazing oil that can help to decrease tension and promote positivity. It has a dry and woody smell that is as grounding as it is uplifting.
The Grounding Oils
This is such a deep and rich smelling oil. It immediately eases my woes as soon as I breathe this baby in. Mixing a few drops of this oil with lavender and vetiver makes for a great nighttime blend.
A strong and powerful oil that is sure to evoke some kind of emotional grounding. This is my number one go to when I am feeling stressed or anxious. A drop or two rubbed on the bottoms of my feet and I’m good to go.
I feel very patriotic when I use this oil since it is sourced in Canada. It translates to the “tree of life” and it’s the truth! I feel more rooted and at ease when I diffuse this oil around my home or put a touch of it on the back of my neck.
My ultimate go to when feeling overanxious and spazzed out. This blend of spruce, ho wood, frankincense, and more promotes tranquility while bringing harmony to the mind and body, and balance to the emotions.
The Calming Oils
Oh sweet sweet lavender! This baby is such a staple in my household. It is known for its soothing properties, both physically and emotionally, and that’s why it should be the oil you have on hand at all times! It is super calming and relaxing.
Lots of people are familiar with chamomile tea, but it is also an oil! If you want some sleepy time then this is your best bet! It has a very tranquil aroma that can be combine with any one of these oils to bring a sense of peace.
An herbal smelling oil, clary sage contains a group of naturally occurring chemicals called esters that are the ultimate in relaxation and soothing. This oils is particularly good for women as it can help to balance out hormonal fluctuations.
This oil is known for many of its powerful properties, but most importantly it promotes a feeling of relaxation, wellness, and satisfaction. It is known as the “King of Oils.” Use it along with other oils to increase their efficacy!
The Releasing Oils
Most people are familiar with the invigorating smell of peppermint, obviously minty and even somewhat spicy. It has a very cooling sensation when used topically, but also helps create a sense of respiratory ease.
When I think about releasing I think about breathing. Eucaplytus is an amazing oil that supports the respiratory system and the mind in staying clear. It has a strong, fresh, and leafy aroma that is sure you cause you to stop and take a deep breath.
A very common herb used in cooking, rosemary can also be used to ease feelings of anxiety. When diffused throughout a room it can actually aid in maintaining concentration while supporting clear breathing.
This oil is slightly different than the other three discussed in this section as it is classified as a citrus oil. It gives off a more subtle scent when compared to others like orange and lemon. While it can be considered uplifting, it is also very calming, and therefore allows for the release of both sad and anxious feelings.
